Sports Funding

Primary PE & Sports Premium - Introduction

The Department for Education suggest in their initial guidance that, possible uses for the funding include:

  • hiring specialist PE teachers  or qualified sports coaches to work alongside primary teachers when  teaching PE;
  • new or additional Change4Life  sport clubs;
  • paying for professional  development opportunities in PE/sport;
  • providing cover to release primary teachers for professional development in PE/sport;
  • running sport competitions, or  increasing participation in the Sainsbury’s School Games;
  • buying quality assured  professional development modules or materials for PE/sport;
  • providing places for pupils on after school sport clubs and holiday clubs.

At Piddle Valley CE First School, we have been encouraging all our children and young people to take part in regular physical activity as part of the drive to improve the nation’s health and well being. The Department of Health guidance advises that we should all be participating in regular, moderately intense activity per day in order to increase life expectancy, cut down the number of coronary heart diseases and ultimately improve our personal health and well being.

The Government has targeted sports in schools so that the legacy of the Olympic games is not lost and so that our children benefit from increased knowledge and skills of the staff who teach them, in the opportunities available and with resources to support their learning and progress. The funding will be used in ways that will always have a direct relationship with the continuous drive towards high quality, consistent and outstanding learning and teaching.

Within our school we have had PE at the heart of our curriculum and value its place in our daily timetables.  Funding from previous Sports grants has allowed us to pay for specialised PE advice and support, with trained adults leading in school training for staff, leading lessons for the children from which the staff learn and are then coached to implement themselves, to inter school competitions and events.  This has always been a tremendous strength and has also provided wonderful transition opportunities for children as they move onwards and upwards through our education system.

As part of our commitment at Piddle Valley CE First School in providing high quality provision and a broad range of experiences for our pupils, we work closely with Premier Sports, a PE and Sports coaching company. In the weekly sessions coaches are able to support staff in areas of PE that may not be a strength and to develop progression as children move from Reception up to Year 4.

 The remaining funds will be used throughout the year to purchase new sports resources and equipment to support the curriculum as well as providing a wide range of sports equipment for playtime and lunchtime activities.

 These are our expectations:

  • Competency against the Teaching Standards;
  • Increased knowledge, understanding and skills;
  • Higher quality outcomes for children and young people;
  • Raised standards in PE and across the curriculum;
  • Improved PE and sport provision for ALL.
  • Confidence
